Welcome Friends of Maynardville Park: Growing Community Through Stewardship and Action

The Wynberg Residents & Ratepayers Association (WRRA) is delighted to formally welcome Friends of Maynardville Park (FOMP) as one of Wynberg's newest community organisations dedicated to protecting, enhancing and celebrating one of our suburb's most treasured public spaces.
Maynardville Park has long been a place where residents gather, children play, families picnic, theatre audiences are entertained, and nature thrives in the heart of Wynberg. Friends of Maynardville Park was established to help ensure that this historic and much-loved green space continues to flourish for generations to come.

Who Are Friends of Maynardville Park?
Friends of Maynardville Park is a community-driven, volunteer-led organisation that works alongside residents, local stakeholders, community groups and the City of Cape Town to support the ongoing care, improvement and activation of Maynardville Park.
The organisation was founded by local residents who share a passion for the park and recognise the important role that community stewardship plays in preserving public spaces.
Through practical projects, environmental initiatives, advocacy and community events, FOMP aims to create a cleaner, greener, safer and more vibrant park for everyone to enjoy.

What Does FOMP Do?
Friends of Maynardville Park focuses on a range of initiatives, including:
Tree planting and environmental restoration projects
Supporting biodiversity and urban greening efforts
Community clean-up and maintenance initiatives
Working with local authorities on park-related issues
Promoting responsible use and appreciation of the park
Organising educational, recreational and community-building events
Encouraging volunteerism and civic participation
Most recently, FOMP brought together more than 50 community members on Youth Day to plant new trees in the park following the loss of several historic English Oaks to the Polyphagous Shot Hole Borer Beetle, demonstrating the power of collective community action.
Why Community Involvement Matters
Public parks thrive when communities take ownership of them. Friends groups around the world have shown that when residents become actively involved in caring for shared spaces, those spaces become safer, better maintained and more widely enjoyed.
By joining Friends of Maynardville Park, residents have an opportunity to contribute directly to the future of one of Wynberg's most significant community assets while connecting with like-minded neighbours who care about the environment, heritage and community wellbeing.
